How Much Can You Realistically Expect to Make Trading Options?

One of the most common questions we hear from traders is:

“If I have $100,000 in my trading account, how much money should I realistically expect to make every month?”

Is 1% achievable? What about 1.5%? Or even 2%?

And perhaps more importantly:

How much buying power, margin and risk do you need to take to pursue those returns?

This Thursday, we’re dedicating our Grow Your Pile Office Hours to answering these questions and setting realistic expectations for traders of all account sizes.

Let’s start with some simple math.

The $100,000 Trading Account

Think about that.

To earn 1.75% per month on a $100,000 account, you would need to average just $87.50 per trading day.

That doesn’t sound particularly difficult, does it?

But here’s where things get interesting.

1.75% per month translates into a 21% simple annual return—or approximately 23.1% if compounded monthly.

That’s an ambitious return objective.

And generating that return consistently, while managing losses, controlling drawdowns and maintaining sufficient buying power, is a completely different challenge.

That’s exactly what we’re going to explore.

What We’ll Cover During Office Hours

1. How Much Can You Realistically Make?

We’ll discuss different monthly return objectives, what they mean in actual dollars, and why making $87.50 per day on average is very different from making $87.50 every day.

We’ll also explain why a target is not a promise—and why some months will inevitably be better than others.

2. Understanding Margin Requirements

How much capital do you actually need to sell options?

We’ll compare:

  • Cash-secured trading

  • Reg-T margin

  • Portfolio margin

  • Buying-power requirements for popular options strategies

And explain why using less buying power doesn’t necessarily mean taking less risk.

3. How Much Buying Power Should You Use?

Should you deploy 10%, 20%, 30% or even 40% of your account’s buying power?

We’ll discuss how we think about buying-power utilization at GYP, why we generally prefer to maintain significant reserves, and what can happen when markets decline and margin requirements increase.

4. Theta vs. Actual Profits

If your portfolio generates $100 per day in theoretical theta, does that mean you’re making $100 every day?

Absolutely not.

We’ll explain the relationship between theta, delta, premium collection, realized profits and portfolio risk.

5. What Happens When You Have a Losing Day?

Imagine collecting $100 per day for 19 trading days, only to lose $3,000 on the twentieth day.

Despite winning on 95% of those days, you would finish the month with a loss.

We’ll discuss why win rate isn’t everything, how drawdowns affect long-term returns, and why controlling losses is often more important than maximizing premium.

6. Putting It All Together: The $100,000 GYP Portfolio

We’ll connect the concepts using a hypothetical $100,000 account and examine:

  • Monthly income objectives

  • Buying-power utilization

  • Portfolio delta and theta

  • Risk management

  • The effect of market selloffs

  • What a sustainable trading process should look like

The Most Important Question

At Grow Your Pile, we’re not interested in showing you how to make $100 today by risking $10,000 tomorrow.

We’re interested in helping you understand how to manage an entire portfolio.

Because the real objective isn’t to maximize today’s profit.

It’s to grow your capital over time while managing the risks that could prevent you from staying in the game.

If you’ve ever wondered how much money you should reasonably expect to make trading options—or whether you’re using too much buying power—this is an Office Hours session you won’t want to miss.
